ID: 117 / Session 7: 2 Invited Oral presentation Topics: Earth Observation technologies and data for carbon accounting GHGSat: Pioneering high-res methane emissions monitoring to support GHG regulatory change in Europe GHGSat, Spain GHGSat continues to be the only EO provider operating a fleet of satellites dedicated to measuring methane emissions at a resolution that allows attribution at facility level. With its currently operational constellation of 9 satellites (12 by end of 2023), every day, GHGSat acquires hundreds of images of sites around the world, linking emissions to the responsible organizations. To optimize the targeting of its high-resolution satellite observations to specific sites, GHGSat has developed complex data processing chains to ingest open-source global satellite data from Copernicus (i.e. Sentinel 5P, Sentinel 2) and others, pioneering in fact the concept of 'tip-and-cue' for GHG emissions. To orchestrate such volume of public and private satellite data, GHGSat developed SPECTRA, which provides an advanced analytical platform to derive actionable GHG emissions insight for companies, governments and policy makers. For example, SPECTRA is capable of monitoring the constantly evolving O&G infrastructure. By examining trends and patterns and using all relevant data available , from open-source coarse regional emissions to GHGSat own high-resolution measurements, from flaring data to production data, from global facility to assets layers, SPECTRA can provide with insights on possible emission precursors. This session will present the results of methane emissions identified with GHGSat high-resolution satellites in Europe, both on-shore and off-shore. Through SPECTRA, we will present the applicability of such technological advances to help organizations/agencies to comply/verify the upcoming regulatory changes in GHG emissions such as the upcoming EU Methane Regulation, the EU Industrial Emissions Directive or the EU Land Fill Directive, all of them stemming from the FITfor55 strategy and the EU Green Deal. We will also discuss how SPECTRA can bring certainty to the EU ETS (Emissions Trading System) and future CBAMS (Carbon border Adjust Mechanism).

ID: 153 / Session 7: 4 Invited Oral presentation Topics: Voluntary Carbon Markets: Current practices Challenges and opportunities for using Earth Observation data in carbon markets BeZero Carbon, United Kingdom Future growth of the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) depends on reliable information about the efficacy of carbon projects and credits issued. Global carbon ratings agencies, like BeZero Carbon, provide transparency into the market using a variety of analytical tools. Earth Observation provides an essential component of independent project monitoring and risk analytics, complemented by information about policy, finances, and other project-specific risks. A key challenge for global ratings agencies is to provide accurate independent assessments across hundreds of projects and a variety of ecosystems. This includes estimates of forest structure and carbon and detailed accounting of ecosystem changes resulting from human activity or natural disturbances, like fire and extreme weather. At BeZero we combine data from space agencies, academic labs, commercial partners, and in-house solutions to assess project additionality, carbon accounting, activity displacement, and permanence risks. We believe that building the best monitoring solutions relies on collaborative efforts combining cutting edge science across industry and research institution house developments include machine learning approaches for monitoring of dryland forests and estimates of forest changes. We are also building an extensive database of forest inventory plots to constrain carbon stocks, gains, and losses as reported by project developers and remotely sensed biomass layers. Statistical modelling approaches provide further context on project baselines and additionality while long-term records of fire and drought help us better assess specific risks associated with project permanence. Ambitious space programs, like the Sentinel series of satellites, and increasing availability of data from space agencies on cloud platforms further enhances our ability to develop the next generation of satellite monitoring tools for the voluntary carbon market. 9:35am - 9:45am
